Mug Rugs

For Valentine's Day a cute little pink mug rug.

I have just loved making these Mug Rugs. I have made several in the last week or so. They are so easy and I can use my scraps, always a plus. I never throw away any of my scraps and love getting scraps from others.

I use fusible Bosal Craf-Tex (this comes in all sorts of forms: place mats, circles, or yardage) to make my 5 1/2″ x 7 1/2″ mug rugs. I first cut two pieces… 1- 5 1/2″ x 7 1/2″ and 1- 5″ x 7″. I then make a pieced bit of your own making; for the top of the mug rug.  Growing the piecing until you get the desired size and look. I then size it down so that there is about 1/2″ on all sides.Placing the craft tex on the wrong side of the mug rug top. Here is how I do my miter corner. I first, fold in the corner as such; then bring the edges together nicely. Then you go all around the edge and iron it down. Mitering the corners. You will do this to the both the top piece and back piece. All edges ironed down and corners should look like this. This is the back of the mug rug. You will have a top piece and a back or bottom piece. The top will be ever so slightly smaller then the bottom. I use a decorative stitch to secure them together. You will also, iron them together and the fusible will help hold it while you sew it together, be mindful of the corners. you want your miter corners to show nicely.

See how pretty your miter corners are. :)Once you have the two sides together, you may quilt it as you see fit. Be mindful that the quilting will show on the back. here are some others I have done. Here is a picture of the quilting showing on the back.

Have fun!! You really can use anything for the center, left over batting would work just as well; I use what is on hand. These can be made with any size scraps, strips, whole cloth piece, UFO blocks, ……you get to decide. I make mine a universally consistent size, but this too, can be up to you. If you have the really big mugs you might want the size of the Mug Rug to be much larger; or visa versa you might have dainty tea cups in which you might want a smaller Mug Rug.

Just always remember to have fun and there is no wrong way to make these. I would love to see what you come up with; you can share with me on Instagram.

Until next…………Spring is almost here embrace the seasonal change.
