I started and finished my first Instagram quilt along. Well, maybe this is my second start, the first being the Quilter’s Planner QAL at the beginning of January (which will end in December 2017). But definitely my first finish. 🙂
I was so looking forward to getting the book and joining in. I ordered the book
from Amazon and started on the 17th of January and I finished my last block after only doing nine of the fifty blocks. To be completely honest, I found the patterns to be very poorly written and frustrating. Surprisingly, I love the blocks that I made and the book is beautiful. I am very happy to have added it to my collection.
I feel that a beginner might have a difficult time. Not being able to see the mistakes in the patterns before cutting out their fabric. Which if you have yardage will be okay. However, if you are a scrappy quilter (as I am): you may find yourself making mistakes that will change your fabric choices altogether; which I did twice. I had just enough and BAM a miscut left me short, so I would have to change fabrics. It all worked out in the end. 🙂 One of the reasons I love scraps…..the challenge of it all.
I was working with Amy Butler scraps and some others that I thought all went together nicely. Taking inspiration from a past co-worker of mine, I jumped in with both feet. This was a color way that is not my normal. I had so much fun working with the bright yellows and greens. Say nothing of the PINKS… yes pinks! I love them in this top. That is saying a lot: for those of you who know me ….. already know pink is not my flavor. 🙂
I finished out the top in a wonderful Modern layout suggested in the book. I just love how easy it went together and made it larger. I believe this is 79″ x 89″. Not bad for just nine unfinished 12.5″ blocks. I would say that if I never make any of the other blocks in this book……the layout suggestions are absolutely FANTASTIC!! Reason enough to buy the book!
